In such a low economy, what’s a well manicured girl to do? Well, I have 28 answers for you and they all cost $.99 each.
If you were keeping up with our Top Coat testing, you’ll know that the winner was a no name top coat that could be purchased at Supply Source. Unfortunately, they have a $25 minimum – something that’s not normally a problem, but with such low prices, this is one site where $25 almost seems insurmountable. So for the next 2 odd weeks, I’m going to be posting some of the Basix Polishes since the swatches on the site leave a tad to be desired.
I’m starting off with some of the lighter colors, and quite honestly, this is where I think Basix has its strength. They have some very nice irridescents hidden in the mix.
Opalscent (yes, I know it’s misspelled – go tell Basix!) has some serious blue flash and Pink Opalescent has some to a lesser degree – both are gorgeous. Sheer Gold Dust looks like a white creme in the bottle, but ends up being more gold on the tips due to the heavy irridescence. Snow Pearl was just a hot frosty mess.
On the dock, two weatherworn warehouse men are taking a five minute break.
Joe: Can’t believe they’re so short staffed they got me naming polishes.
Earl: *nods* Economy and all. So any ideas so far?
Joe: What do you think of Opalscent and Pink Opalescent?
Earl: That’s alot of opals there, Joe.
Joe: Well, I Edna and I have our 30th anniversary coming up.
Earl: Been shopping for a present?
Joe: Yeah, and that’s what opals look like.
Earl: You don’t say.
Joe: I can name the other one Snow Pearl and the other one Gold.
Earl: That one isn’t exactly gold.
Joe: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Fine, we’ll call it Sheer Gold Dust.

Haha but their names are Jim-Bob III and Earl…XD
Thanks for the swatches!
These will be great for Frankening!
I look forward to more of these polish swatches!
I also hope that you do another test of top coats, one that includes drugstore brands. I have a funny feeling that NYC/WNW/etc probably use the same basic formula.
Instead of feeding a lemming for unknown polishes that are really a dent in the “buy” everyone wants to make of GOOD polishes, do the drug store comparison.
It makes more sense.
I have enough cheap nail polish. Do I need more? Probably not.
Still, thanks for the swatches. Of course I looked, but didn’t buy.
The more I think about it, the more I think these polishes are a bit of a time sink, too.
Do a good brand like Kleancolor or something that has some innovation.
@Nonan-The top coat test that was run here, despite 5 of the top coats being donated, still ran me $140+. I will be more than willing to conduct another test with whatever top coats someone wants, as long as they are footing the bill.
@Nonan – if you’re not happy with the brands Gabrielle swatches (or anyone else here for that matter), why don’t YOU go out and buy them with YOUR money and then take some of YOUR time to swatch them for OUR entertainment? I have a list about a mile long I could give you…
Gabrielle, as one of your testers I just wanted to say THANK YOU for initiating and footing the bill for the Top Coat Testing. We all learned so much from it, and I am truly grateful (as all of the nail polish community should be).
I just want to second what Laeny said. I was a tester and it was a huge learning experience. Plus for the record, the majority of Top coats tested were not “unknown” or “cheap” brands. Poshe, Diamont, Seche Vite and Lippmann are all well known and definitely not cheap, just to name a few.
I want to add to the choir of thank-yous for the Top Coat Testing.
Besides, there are some of us who have a small collection (around 120 polishes myself) and don’t mind seeing swatches of a cheap brand that works, that, if I am lucky, will soothe my lemmings for colours I have seen on more expensive brands (I am one of those people who has lemmings for colour/finish combinations, not for brands).
Thanks once again!
Nonan – if you want a polish or top coat comparison done a specific way, why don’t you do it yourself? Your tone is quite demanding and IMHO extremely rude. Start a blog, do the test, publish the results. The end.
Nonan, IMHO, you should look up the following words in a dictionary:
1) demanding
2) ungrateful
3) STFU (I suggest Urban dictionary for this one)
Late, but hey ho, I’ll throw my opinion in anyhow. I would like to say a huge thank you to Gab for letting me be included and also for co-ordination this & putting her time, money & effort in to do this test for US because lets face it, she could have just bought all those top coats & tried them out herself to see which was the best. She did this off her own back, not for financial gain or off the back of a polish company but for the good of the polish community and I for one am very grateful for the knowledge that has come out of this test. On another note, Nonan, you need to take your self-important, grabby, greedy little ass & take your demands somewhere else. You want d/s brands testing? Here’s an idea…. DO IT YOURSELF!! Not everyone was put on this planet to do your bidding!
These all look boring too me. Not worth ordering that many polishes for the topcoat.
