Way Back in Grade School…

When I picked these two colors up, I actually didn’t pay too much attention to the names as I was positive I didn’t have them in my collection. After I was labelling the graphics, I had to laugh. I’ll agree with Whimsical, it’s an apropos name. But Popular? Really? These names were obviously targeting the tweener crowd where being popular is of paramount importance. For me, it just made me feel old.

I had mixed feelings about these two polishes. I can picture a young girl wearing this to school and having all her little girlfriends twittering over how “cool” her haphazard manicure was. But for an adult where crisp application is important, these colors had some problems. The base color was too sheer and too opaque at the same time. I need three streaky coats of both colors to get a semblance of opacity and Popular fared better than Whimsical. It is extremely difficult to be strategically placing hexagonal glitters when the dab effects the opacity. At the same time, the milky colors covered up the hexagonal glitters from the first and second coat.

I like the concept of these colors. Whimsical is a blue base with blue and pink hexagonal glitters. But I don’t think the not-quite-opaque color really compliments the nails. Rather looks like the nail is extremely yellow underneath, doesn’t it? Popular is more opaque than Whimsical so I ended up liking the finished product a bit more. But I rather wished it had the pink and blue hexagonal glitters that Whimsical did instead of just silver.

I have another idea about the name popular. I believe Revlon first made this polish under the name of Starry Pink. I know the color was popular and it soon became htf. Revlon is not sold in Sweden where I live and I searched high and low on the web for it. When I finally snagged it I ordered another promising polish as well, Popular. It turned out they’re twins, so now I have a backup. Good thing I really like this polish :-)

I got mine in a Swap from US (I live in Brazil) and I got the version named Starry Pink, I’m glad they kept this colors because they’re cute and delicate.

Not to mention that “Whimsical” is a complete copycat of Deborah Lippmann’s “Glitter In The Air”!

I think those colors are rather nice, although I do get what you mean about it not being quite opaque enough. I don’t own those, but I’d try to use them as a layer over a lighter color perhaps? I quite like Popular tho.

I believe “Popular” is in reference to the song sung by Glinda in the musical Wicked – the pink sparkly polish definitely makes me think of Glinda the Good Witch.

Jamie – I like that interpretation much, much better than mine!
